Zdenka Havlova

Zdenka, an architect and researcher, was born in the Czech Republic’s Zlin, a town of modernist visionary urban designs of the early 20th century, which played an essential role in her choice of profession. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in architecture and urbanism and has received a Ph.D. in architecture from the University of Tokyo.

Zdenka’s research revolves around multilevel pedestrian urbanization and public space in developed, hyper-developed, and developing cities worldwide. She is interested in the roles above- and below-ground pedestrian systems have in the context of public space, especially in relation to the urban transformations of the past century. The stratification, privatization and commercialization of public space, as well as questions of the Oriental versus the Occidental, also feature in her research.
